Street Style Mumbai Masala Chai, Starbucks Who?
I have to agree with aapplemint.com on one thing, and that is the fact that Starbucks and about thirty other notorious coffee shop brands would epicly lose to the masala chai served straight off the streets in Mumbai. In case you’re like me, and have absolutely no plans to travel anywhere near this heavily populated city of Bombay anytime soon, I suggest you take a look at the video below. Make a Trader Joe’s or Fairway grocery list, and prepare to turn your kitchen into a liquid herbal sanctuary for the next fifteen minutes to half hour.
Although my barely ever at home lifestyle makes it difficult to envision my kitchen as a Mumbai Masala mini chai factory, the random street vendor’s fascinating tea blending technique just may inspire me to pick a weekend of experimentation and possibly even turn it into a chai tea making party. I mean if I can do a Soul Food Sunday at my crib, why not have a Chai Tea Saturday and toss in a couple of yoga mats?
So as luck may have it, in addition to the video I was able to get the ingredients for your grocery list from aapplemint.com. Thank me later but most importantly enjoy..
- 8 brown cardamoms (skins removed)
- 20 green cardamoms
- 6-8 black peppercorns
- 8 teaspoons fennel seeds
- 2 tsps ginger powder
- 12 cloves
- 4 cinnamon sticks
So there you have it. Grind all these spices to a very fine powder using a coffee grinder, preserve in an air tight container, and voici, chai for the now and for the reserve.
