While travelling in Mexico during my college years,  I always enjoyed having Mexican hot chocolate at breakfast.  It's tastier than its American counterpart and has subtle notes of cinnamon.  Then, many years later after moving to NYC, I discovered that the little bodega on our corner had the Abuelita chocolate disks, so I happily started making Mexican hot chocolate at home.

Within hours of reading about the massive protesting in Mexico against the newly appointed pres, I saw this post on Abuelita Mexican Chocolate Ice Cream and had to repost. That and it looks so so good. Appropriate for the season and climate – meteorologically and politically speaking, need-less-to-say this post caught my ‘fat girl in an average body’ foodie attention. So get your ice cream churn ready (they have them for as low as $49 at Bed Bath & Beyond) and enjoy.. Levon S.

Chocolate Oat Dulce de Leche Bars

Espresso spiked chocolate crust is pretty much all this coffee and chocoholic needed to hear to be convinced that a second grocery run would be harmless.   I love everything dulce de leche and I’m very particular about crusts.  Good crusts have the ability to push ordinary desserts to the next level of sugary greatness.  In addition to that let’s face it, bars are just easier to eat as well as sneak into a movie theatre or whatever public event you’re dealing with. So I leave you with the ‘how to’ on putting together this amazing load of bliss courtesy of my friends at Daily Crave..

Cookie Dough Cheesecake Bars

Fifteen Spatulas has what could potentially be a highly addictive Cookie Dough Cheesecake Bars recipe, that to make matters even worse has a pecan crust.  There is also a walk-through video that I feel you should have.  Truthfully I just need a group of folks to share the shame and calories.  I will therefore probably be making a duplicate grocery run today due to the inevitable temptation from this horrible picture.  I just wanna make sure that I did mention that these bars have a pecan crust?… Ok..

Bottega Louie Part Deux

A few weeks ago we hit up one of my favorite organized chaos type Metropolitan downtown LA spots, Bottega Louie.  I won’t go into great detail since I’ve spoken of this place before, but as always it was a solid experience.  The food was great along with my company..

Tress Glenn, Braylen Brooks, Levon Saunders

..and the vibe was sizzling. The room was filled with a bunch of fabulous, dressed and ready for whatever Hollywood types, and our centrally located table gave us an unlimited amount of possibilities for people watching. Our server convinced me to try out the Trenne which had a unique, crunchy but tasty triangular penne, with braised prime rib, Tuscan black kale and shaved Grana parmesan with a light sauce.  I was nearly in heaven.

It was an excellent recommendation and I was equally pleased with the Bottega Louie Peanut Butter Terrine finale number.  They have excellent desserts so I wasn’t at all surprised.

We ate, drank, and chatted about random topics such as Braylen’s new upcoming show on Oxygen “Shopaholic”, Tress’s promising auditions for various projects, my foodaholic tendencies, and extremely stylish mini adults that were lingering near our table..

Stylish Bottega Louie mini-adult patron..

So once again, a great experience at one of LA’s noisiest and crowded, yet highly addictive restaurants.  Similar to my love hate relationship with New York City.  I digress.  Until my next Bottega Louie adventure..

The Secret Ingredients in LA’s Best Cheesecake

Canter’s Deli on N. Fairfax has the best cheesecake in W. Hollywood.  On top of the euphoric experience in my rental car with this classic cheesecake chunk of heaven, I was able to find the actual recipe from Angela on www.iflipforfood.com.

So there you have it, from the Fairfax bakery to Angela’s kitchen.  Are you up for the challenge??  Or are you gonna simply wait it out until your next trip to W. Hollywood??

Urth Caffe – A True Organic Experience

For an organic people watching experience in LA go to Urth Caffe on Melrose in W. Hollywood.  For good looking food, ask for their menu.  Did I say that backwards??  Either way it is truly a good place to patronize.  The food is certified organic and fresh, and so are the patrons.  Well, the patrons are certainly the latter.  I’m not sure which was better, the food itself or the scenery.  It’s a must go if you’re in people watching mode and want to have a good spot to sit and chat for hours on end on one of the most popular street cafes in West Hollywood.  They have excellent tea and coffee as one would expect, since they won the best coffee in LA Award over a decade ago.  Their food is fresh and cafe simple and the sidewalk patrons are good company.  Their White Albacore Tuna Sandwich was simply perfect in addition to their Green Tea Bebero..

And the richness and diversity of their Three Layer Chocolate, Espresso and Vanilla Cheesecake resembled several of our cafe table mates…

I may just have to pay a revisit before the week is out to take in some more.. organic scenery..

Max Brenner’s Chocolate Crackhouse

You know how bodegas are cover-ups for drug dealings and pawn shops are cover-ups for gun shops and massage parlors are, well you see where I’m going with this.  Well I’m a firm believer that Chocolate by the Bald Man Max Brenner is a cover-up restaurant for sugar fiends like none other than myself, disguised with a bunch of normal restaurant menu type items.  As tourist-flooded and predictably super crowded as this place gets each and every weekend, Max Brenner is one of my favorite brunch spots in the city.  If you’re like me and have a nagging sweet tooth, you just may be stepping into heaven (plugs Robert Kelly into Spotify) the minute you open the doors to this place.  That is, given the doors aren’t already inevitably open with the line of people forming down Broadway.  This place is a popular Union Square choice for Sundays in NYC  amongst the tourists and the sugar fiended out locals, as well as any other day of the week that your sugar addiction is active and full throttle.  The menu is like no other and will require you to tuck aside the smart phones and Blackberries for at least ten minutes to study over the mouth-watering choices on the pages.  It’s one of those annoyingly wonderful menus that have so much to choose from, you spend more time deciding on a dish than it takes for the food to actually come out.  One thing is certain though, whatever you choose, you will be more than satisfied.  Beware of the heavy sugar content of 90% of the menu items, hence the restaurant name.  Good luck, enjoy, and brace yourself for a potentially massive sugar crash or even worse… to become addicted to the Bald Man.

The London Candy Company – So Good They Have to Write Home

One of my foodie partners in crime hipped me to one of the coolest candy shops on the UES NY.  The London Candy Company is the British fusion candy mecca that has the warmest, most inviting staff, not to mention the greatest assortment of sugar crack.  Cadbury has to be pleased with the rapid progress of this small chocolate haven.  The prices are a bit up there, but one has to take into consideration that these spirit lifting trinkets are imported from the UK.  I enjoyed my treasures that I took home in addition to the habitual freebies they are known for tossing in after your purchase. Kudos to Jigs who is as sweet (kind) as his stock and cheers to Marie for the introduction.  I’d say it’s a rather nice little pinch of spice to the sometimes drab upper east side world.

Edible Treasures at Antrel Rolle NFL Draft Week Party

So as I waited for my fashionably late friends to show up to the TR Luxury Group’s first series of NFL Draft Parties of the week, I conversed with the lovely Ms. Vicky P of Cakes By Me Vicky P.  She was waiting on her staff and I was waiting on my friends, so we chatted it up about the important issues in life like red velvet, buttercream dream, carrot cake, and Antrel Rolle and how well he layers onto a cake.  I sampled her edible treasures and was delightfully surprised.  Her cakes were actually rich, moist and tasteful, and not just beautiful and dry.  Kudos to Vicky.  Although it would’ve been nice to have sampled the Philippe Chow passed hors d’oeuvres pre-Cakes By Me Vicky P, my palate was happy.

Ghirardelli and Godiva Wars

The battle that took place in my living room between the milk chocolate with salted caramel and dark chocolate with toffee chips lasted over two days. In the end they ultimately both lost. I devoured both the Ghirardelli and the Godiva treasures found in my freezer and suffered a severe sugar crash that put me in a state of confusion and slight coma over the next few days.
